SPJRD Chief Editor Ingilan serves as keynote speaker at international conference in Bali

Educators and researchers from around the world convened in Bali to discuss new ideas and emerging technologies that will continue to shape the future of teaching and learning. Driven by a shared passion for improving education, participants engaged in lively discussions and exchanged insights that set the tone for the 4th COROLLA 2025 International Conference on Research and Learning in Language and Arts. The two-day event, held on 23–24 November 2025 at the Postgraduate Auditorium of Udayana University in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, provided teachers, scholars, and innovators with a platform to share experiences, spark collaboration, and envision what classrooms of the future could look like.

As one of the highlights of the event, Sajed S. Ingilan, the Chief Editor of the Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development (SPJRD), delivered the keynote speech. Widely recognized for his work in promoting Mindanao studies and Indigenous knowledge, Ingilan leads the journal as one of Mindanao’s emerging research platforms known for amplifying regional voices and strengthening academic visibility across the ASEAN research community.

His keynote, titled ‘Suwara sin Bangsa: Championing the Language and Culture of Sulu and Mindanao through the Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development,” emphasized how local languages, histories, and the cultural practices from Sulu and Mindanao deserve equal space in global academic conversations. He shared how SPJRD continues to serve as a bridge for scholars, allowing Mindanao’s narratives to reach regional and international readers while inspiring younger researchers to take pride in their heritage.

This bridging role addresses a concern that has long been a sentiment among students, teachers, and researchers that they lacked resources on the language and culture of Sulu and Mindanao. To fill in the lacuna and give suwara (voice) to what has been silenced in the discourse of the majority, the SPJRD, the Q2-ranked Scopus-indexed journal of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), champions works on the language and culture of Sulu and Mindanao. This presentation discussed articles dealing with the language and culture of Tausug, Sama-Bajau, Kagan, Blaan, Tboli, Sama, Bagobo-Tagabawa, Obo Manobo, Kinamiging Manobo, and other indigenous cultural communities in Sulu and Mindanao. It also examined strategies and other initiatives for disseminating these works. These articles are hoped to inspire research and extension projects, as well as inform the formulation of policies, for the future of the bangsa (nation).

Standing once again on Balinese soil, Ingilan recalled his first scholarly visit.
“ My first paper presentation was in 2011 in Ganesha University of Education in Singaraja, Bali, Indonesia…I read a paper on Bahasa Sug syntax. Now, I am back to Bali to deliver a talk on our advocacy for the recognition of the suwara of our people. Magsukul to the organizers for recognizing our humble contribution,” he said, emphasizing his years of dedication, research, and cultural advocacy can ripple far beyond one’s home region.

The conference also showcased advances in data-driven resources and adaptive learning platforms, emphasizing practical approaches for educators and researchers. With the participants from Iraq, Armenia, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Poland, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the event highlighted the value of cross-cultural collaboration and the global impact of local knowledge.

As part of this effort, hard copies of the SPJRD were distributed to universities across Indonesia and Iraq, including Udayana University (Bali), Universitas Negeri Makassar (South Sulawesi), Institut Agama Islam Negeri Curup (Bengkulu), Universitas Al Asyarah Mandar, Kufa University (Iraq), and Universitas Pgri Ronggolawe Tuban (East Java), ensuring that Mindanao’s voices and research contributions reach a global audience. The proceedings of COROLLA 2025 will be published in a Scopus-indexed Springer series, with Assoc. Prof. Ahmed J. Obaid (Kufa University) and Assoc. Prof. Mutmainnah (Universitas Al Asyarah Mandar) serving as editors, further extending the impact of the knowledge shared at the conference to researchers worldwide.

Through initiatives like SPJRD and platforms such as COROLLA 2025, the voices, languages, and cultures of Sulu and Mindanao are gaining recognition on the global stage, inspiring a new generation of researchers and shaping the future of education beyond borders.
