The SOUTHEASTERN PHILIPPINES JOURNAL OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT is an international open access multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal responding to the Mindanao and ASEAN region's development needs, preserving a knowledge base that covers urgent issues such as climate change mitigation, energy security, sustainable agriculture, political and economic security in the ASEAN, and socio-cultural and emerging trends and innovations that impact markets, industries, and institutions.
SPJRD History
Since its establishment in 1983, the University's Research and Extension Divisions have played a pivotal role in fostering and promoting research activities. Initially, research findings were published in "The Fruit Bowl," the University's inaugural journal. However, as the University expanded its programs beyond agriculture, forestry, and natural resources, it underwent a transformation in December 1994, leading to the establishment of the "Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development (SPJRD)."
Today, SPJRD serves as the University's primary publication outlet, offering a multidisciplinary platform responsive to the evolving needs of the Mindanao and ASEAN regions. The journal is dedicated to preserving a knowledge base that addresses pressing issues aligned with the Research and Development (R&D) agenda, particularly championing works on Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) of Mindanao.
Recognizing the crucial role of research publication in advancing scientific careers, the University prioritizes generating public awareness of its R&D endeavors as evident in making the Journal available online in 2019. Under the helm of Christopher C. Gonzales (Editor-in-Chief, March 2019), Cecirly G. Puig (Associate Editor, September 2019), and Sajed S. Ingilan (Editor-in-Chief, 2020 up to the present), the Journal invites submissions from various authors worldwide through the Open Journal System, thus contributes to the diversity of authors in the Journal.
In November 2020, the Publication Unit launched an audio podcast platform to promote the groundbreaking research developed by the University's esteemed scientists and researchers. This initiative evolved into "SPJRD Talks" in 2021 and 2022, a dynamic monthly scholars' forum that facilitates research dissemination, interaction, and knowledge exchange. By bridging the gap between the University and the wider community, SPJRD Talks encourages researchers to share their studies and engage in lively discussions with participants. This platform has proven to be an effective and engaging means of popularizing the University's cutting-edge research.
Over the years, USeP's research activities have yielded impressive results, culminating in numerous publications and citations. The journal's recognition and indexing in Andrew Gonzales Philippine Citation Index in January 2023 and Scopus in September of the same year exemplify the high scholarly standards maintained by the editors, international reviewers and advisers. The issues from 2021 to present have been indexed in Scopus, and the Journal will be re-evaluated in 2027. Another significant milestone was achieved when SPJRD was indexed in the ASEAN Citation Index (ACI) in June 2024, a central regional database dedicated to indexing bibliographic records and citations of all quality ASEAN research outputs.
Through the inclusion of SPJRD in prestigious international indexing bodies, it will remain at the forefront of research dissemination, promoting excellence and innovation in the world. Through its commitment to quality research and publication, the Journal continues to make significant contributions to the academic and scientific communities, transforming communities in the ASEAN region and beyond.
